A fire in a local pub has shined a light on the speed of progress in the area. the pub was purchased by the council in 2021 but has since be left derelict. The fire is just one result from the slow pace of development.
In 2017 planning started for The Gleadless Valley master plan. The plan is wide in scope and aims to regenerate the area but its the housing element that has people worried. The proposed action around housing includes upgrading old council housing, building new housing and in some cases demolishing buildings. However, residents have seen little progress.
I spoke with people in the community about the delays in plans and their hopes for the future.
